WATHGILL CAMP UNDERGOES £2 MILLION SITE REGENERATION

Over £2 million has been invested to improve site facilities at Wathgill Camp, improving training areas for military personnel. Landmarc Support Services (Landmarc) and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) have worked together to make extensive improvements and modernise facilities.

Wathgill Camp has a growing need to expand, as at peak times, the site can have up to 900 visitors each day.

David Morrison, Programme Manager at Landmarc, said: “We’ve completed five major projects within this area; three inside Wathgill Camp and two just outside the camp on Catterick Training Area. It equates to around £2 million worth of work, which includes replacing the heating system with a new, more energy efficient system, creating new storage facilities, providing an overflow car park and delivering four new troop shelters to cope with the growing capacity of visitors to the site.

“The shelters have been strategically placed and will provide a versatile space for troops to train, protecting them from the elements should they experience adverse weather conditions whilst out on exercise.”

Lt Col Mark Holden, Principal Training Safety Officer for DIO SD (Service Delivery) Training in the North, said, “Wathgill Camp provides a firm base for training, supporting anything from a small unit of around 30 – 40 people up to 900 each day during the summer cadet season. It is a big estate and it requires a lot of maintenance, so this investment by DIO will help to improve the quality of training that units can undertake.

“Ultimately, our role at DIO is to provide a safe place for troops to train, in the right environment, with the right equipment. These projects will help us deliver this aim.”
